June National Food Holidays Worth Celebrating

I can’t quite believe that June has arrived. Not only does June mark the first month of winter, but it also signals the halfway mark through the year! Fortunately, there are plenty of fabulous food days to look forward to throughout the month to keep everyone’s stomachs happy. Some of the days that I am most looking forward to include National Cheese Day, Cupcake Lover’s Day, World Tapas Day, International Picnic Day and National Martini Day.

Some of my other favourite June food days include:

National Rotisserie Chicken Day (2^nd June)

You can’t go wrong with chicken on a spit. And the best bit besides the juicy chicken is the crispy chicken skin. I love to enjoy my rotisserie chicken with a salad, or warm potato salad, roast potatoes, stuffing, gravy and veg.

Fish and Chip Day (4^th June)

Fish and chips, one of my absolute favourite takeaways. Best enjoyed sat on the sand at the beach, I absolutely love battered haddock and chips or battered cod and chips when I’m back home in the UK. However, in Sydney, it’s all about the grilled fish and chips with chicken salt for me – you can’t beat it! Oh, don’t forget to throw in a crab claw, prawn cutlet, potato scallop and of course salt and pepper squid for the ultimate meal.

National Apple Strudel Day (17^th June)

Apple strudels, one of the nicest desserts to enjoy in the autumn and winter months. My absolute favourite place to enjoy a warm apple strudel with vanilla ice cream or custard is in Vienna at Café Landtmann. You can’t beat the wafer-thin layers of pastry with cinnamon and icing sugar dusted on top. Yummmm.

Cream Tea Day (26^th June)

What better way to spend a lazy Sunday afternoon than with the girls enjoying afternoon cream tea. There are plenty of places to enjoy the miniature sandwiches, cakes and scones with sparkling wine and a big pot of tea, including Vaucluse House and many of the hotels in Sydney CBD. However, I’m still yet to find a restaurant to serve a proper cream tea like you get in the UK, with clotted cream served with the freshly baked scones. No dollop cream for me, I’m definitely all about the heavenly clotted cream.

National Mai Tai Day (30^th June)

Mai Tai cocktails…they always remind me of overseas holidays to tropical island paradises. This long, colourful and fruity rum-based cocktail is always refreshing to drink and the perfect way to start or end a night. It’s also the perfect way to end a month of delicious food discoveries!
