March has arrived and so too has Autumn in the southern hemisphere. Not only are the days beginning to shorten, but the heat of summer is slowly fading away (that’s good news for me who can’t handle Sydney’s heat!). There’s still plenty of opportunity to make the most of the weather though, with beautiful autumnal walks, paired with delicious autumn dishes.
The good news is that March is full of some delicious national food days’ worth celebrating. There are also some random ones which I’m pretty sure I won’t be partaking in (National Corned Beef and Cabbage Day for instance).
Here are just some of my favourite days that I am most looking forward to!
Cold Cuts Day (3rd March)
If you know me well, then you know that I love a good deli, especially when that deli has an extraordinary display of cold cut meats. Spicy salami, triple smoked hams, cabanossi, chorizo, pancetta and prosciutto are just some of my favourites. Not only are they great within a sandwich, but they are perfect when entertaining as part of a charcuterie board, cheese platter or canapes. Of course, you can always enjoy them as a late-night snack as they are! I also love leftover roast meats whether that's turkey, chicken, beef or roast pork.
Baked Scallops Day (12th March)
Scallops are one of my favourite types of shellfish and what better way to enjoy them than baked? Simply melt butter in a pan and brush your scallops with the butter, sprinkle with salt and pepper. You can also add some breadcrumbs, garlic and herbs to the melted butter in the pan and top the scallops with the mixture. Bake until top is golden and crispy (approx. 10 minutes) and serve. You can even top with some grated parmesan for an extra crunch!
National French Bread Day (21st March)
There’s no beating French bread. Whether it’s a French baguette or brioche bun, there’s something about French bread that gets the tastebuds tantalizing. Wake up early and head to your nearest French patisserie or bakery – you can’t beat the smell of fresh bread straight out of the oven!
National Chip and Dip Day (23rd March)
Another one of my favourite snacking foods has got to be chips and dip (or should I say crisps and dip!). I love nothing more than snuggling up on the couch infront of the TV in a rainy day and watching an old school movie whilst munching on chips and dip. I could easily eat the whole bag which is terrible I know. Give me anything cheese flavoured or spicy chill and I will be as happy as Larry!
Black Forest Cake Day (28th March)
Who loves Black Forest Cake or gateaux? This has got to me one of my absolute favourite cakes or desserts and when made properly, it is truly delicious. Personally, I feel this day should be moved to 29th March (my birthday) so I can indulge and celebrate this delicious cake even more! Originating from the Black Forest in Germany, I definitely think that the best recipes are still found here.
