Brasil by the Kilo Restaurant Review

Pay for your food by the kilo? I like the sound of that!, was my reply when I heard that we would be going to this new Brazilian restaurant in North Sydney.

Brasil by the Kilo, has recently opened close to where I work in the centre of North Sydney, so I thought it would be rude not to try this new restaurant out. Paying for your food by weight is all the rage in Brazil, and it’s hard not to come by a café or eatery that doesn’t offer this concept in the big cities.

I haven’t actually been to Brazil myself, it is on my to do list, but I have heard about this concept before and I think it’s a great idea!

My work colleagues and I arrived around midday on a wet and cold Wednesday lunch time, and were immediately greeted at the door and were each given this plastic card. We were told that we can help ourselves to the buffet of food and then we weigh our plate and this card gets swiped to keep track of your eating expenditure!

Buffet Selection

So off we went to grab a table and then headed to the buffet to soak up the delights that were waiting for us. Salads, rice, potatoes first greeted me, along with chorizo, pork belly, chicken wings, and then I moved around the buffet to find a selection of steak, pies and stews. This was just what we needed on this cold and wet, miserable day.

I helped myself to a variety of dishes and then weighed my plate. The moment of truth – my plate weighed around 230g which was fine with me as it costs $4.20 per 100g – a bargain! If however your plate weighs exactly 500g then you eat for free, whilst if you are not eating in and having takeaway, you can get a 20% discount! Gotta love a discount!

I then got stuck in and I have to say this food was absolutely delicious and so wholesome and filling. The dish that looked just like a cottage pie was amazing and the mash on top was so creamy and cheesy – I was in food heaven! I moved on to the chorizo, and this was equally as yummy, not forgetting the perfectly cooked pork belly that melted in your mouth accompanied by a crispy crackling – crunch, crunch, crunch!

I cleared my plate entirely, having had just enough to fill me up – any more food and I think it would have made me sleep for the rest of the day which would not have gone down too well with my boss I’m sure.

The murals throughout the restaurant provide a lot of colour, and make it a very welcoming and colourful place to sit. It also gives me a sense of Brazil too.

If you dine Thursday, Friday or Saturday night then they have the $42 per person unlimited kilo night where you can eat as much as you like for $42 which isn’t badly priced – especially if the food is this good. I would highly recommend this for anyone that is ravenous to get the most for your money. If you are a small eater then this night might not be the best for you.

The food was hot and beautifully presented. As the restaurant was fairly empty when we arrived I’m not sure how often they replenish the dishes so it would be interesting to come again when it’s busier to see things in full swing and how this is handled. The only thing I would say is that I was expecting more meat. There was only one plate with a couple of steaks on, so if you are looking to fill up on just meat then this might not be for you. However, I thoroughly enjoyed my meal, and loved the variety of dishes as well especially as they were all flavoursome and filling. I will definitely look to return and I must check out their takeaway service too!
