Montezuma's Restaurant Review

Montezuma’s is a fun and colourful Mexican restaurant positioned close to the centre of Crows Nest and serves an array of Mexican dishes at affordable prices.

From the moment you enter Montezuma’s you are greeted to bright and colourful walls with murals and paintings lining the walls as well as a plethora of hanging puppets on strings dangling from the ceilings.

It took a while for one of the staff to notice us, but we were soon shown to a table nearer the back end of the restaurant and were sat at a wooden booth. Above us was yet another puppet on strings and we were each presented with a menu and told the procedures on ordering. For drinks orders then you need to head to the bar and order there whilst for food, your waiter will come to you.

The menu itself was huge and full of all the typical Mexican dishes you would expect. Choose from a selection of nachos, tacos, burritos and enchiladas as well as chilli con carne, chicken dishes and meatballs. For the indecisive, then you could always opt for one of the combination dishes and have a mixture of your favourites.

After some much deliberation, I ended up choosing the Colorado which comprised a Chorizo Enchilada, Chicken Enchilada with Spanish rice, frijoles and sour cream for a reasonable $24.90.

The drinks list was just as exhaustive and included plenty of Mexican beers, wines, cocktails, mocktails, soft drinks and spirits. Of course there are Mexican favourites including Sangria and Margaritas

After what seemed like a lengthy wait, our dishes soon arrived and the plates were hot. Each of our meals was a good portion size with plenty of sour cream. The chicken was extremely tender and the chorizo was full of flavour, topped with cheese and a good amount of sauce. I wasn’t such a fan of the frijoles though which was a bit bland in taste.

If you feel like dessert then the Churros sounded good as did the Mexican Date Cake – Montezuma’s famous cake served warm with walnut and syrup topping.

Montezuma’s also has a large number of dishes that are Vegan as well as Gluten free, which was pointed out to us in the menu and by the staff.

Overall, Montezuma’s is a family friendly Mexican restaurant with affordable prices and also caters for large groups. A colourful restaurant, it’s hard not to smile upon entering and there’s lots to gaze at whilst eating.

The food was good for the price if you are looking for a tasty and hearty Mexican meal on a budget and gradually filled up during the night. Montezuma’s also has a great Kid’s Menu for little amigos, whilst you can also order takeaway if you prefer to enjoy your Mexican in the comfort of your own home.

The manager and owner of Montezuma’s also spoke to us at the end which I thought was a nice touch and she generally welcomed back any feedback to help improve her restaurant. Don’t forget to sign up to their club to get a free meal on your birthday!
