Head down to the Sydney Lunar Markets, presented by The Star Sydney for some tasty treats this Chinese New Year. This free pop-up food festival runs from January 27th to February 5th every night from 5pm weekdays and from 4pm on weekends down at Pyrmont Bay Park.
Comprising 20 stalls, you can find a range of cuisines ranging from Thai, Chinese, Taiwanese, Japanese, Asian fusion and lots more to satisfy those tastebuds!
Perfectly placed by the water, you can enjoy food with a view with waterfront eating and a good amount of chairs and tables to make use of. We had arrived early, which meant we didn’t have to contend with the large crowds which typically can be found later in the night and at similar festivals like the Night Noodle Markets which can be too crowded for my liking.
If you do prefer to have food delivered to you, then Menulog will deliver the food straight to you in a designated seating area so you can sit back, relax and not worry about losing your seat!
All the food stalls here looked extremely appetising, but the BBQ Chicken Skewers ($12 for 2) from Hoy Pinoy really caught our attention and smelled amazing. A few stalls down was Bao Stop which serves traditional Chinese and Taiwanese street food and I ordered up the Peking Duck Fries, made to order! I only had to wait about 5 minutes for the Peking Duck Fries to collect and they were well worth the wait, they looked so good!
We sat down by the water and quickly dug in. The Chicken Skewers were super tender and slightly charred by the BBQ adding to the flavour, whilst the Peking Duck Fries were smothered in peking duck sauce and spring onions. The fries were crispy and there was plenty of duck, with lots of crispy skin – yum!
We also headed to Lets Do Yum Cha to end with a mix of BBQ Pork Buns and Dim Sim (4 pieces for $11). The Dim Sim were good portion sizes and I soon gobbled these up, whilst the BBQ Buns had plenty of filling and sauce.
The Sydney Morning Herald Lunar Markets also had many other great stalls to try out which we didn’t get to try including Luke Nguyen Street Food which serves Smashed fried Chicken, Vietnamese Pho-Guette and Crab & Prawn on Sugarcane. One Tea Lounge infuses premium Japanese Green Tea into their food, serving Spicy Duck Waffle Fries, Sliders and some dishes for the sweet-tooths including Cookie Shots and Matcha Soft Serve Waffle. Don’t worry – those highly addictive potatoes on sticks (Twistto) also made an appearance here too!
Make sure you leave room for dessert though, with Black Star Pastry x N2 Gelato serving up the Strawberry Watermelon Cake, Matcha the Frog and Gong Xi Fa Chocolate. Look out for the cute rooster faces too! You should also head to the Bubble Tea Bar for a wide selection of alcoholic and non-alcoholic bubble tea to wash down all that tantalising food!
Open until 9pm Sunday to Wednesday and 10pm Thursday to Saturday, make sure you don’t miss out on the Lunar Markets in Sydney this Year of the Rooster!
